Business website or online store: how to choose?

Business website or e-commerce store? It all depends on how your clients buy. The key questions to ask yourself before choosing, illustrated with real examples.

It is one of the first questions we are asked. The answer depends less on your industry than on how your clients buy.

When should you choose a business website?

A business website brings clients to you: it presents what you do, reassures and prompts an action — call, book an appointment, request a quote. It is the right choice if:

  • your service is tailored to each client (tradesperson, practice, agency, restaurant, consultant…);
  • the sale is closed in person, by phone or on site;
  • you first want to be found locally.

That’s the case for Château Kalon Nodoz: wines and prices are presented clearly, and ordering is a simple message away.

When should you choose an online store?

An online store sells without you: it takes payments, manages stock and shipping. It makes sense if:

  • your products have a fixed price and need no explanation;
  • you can prepare and ship orders on a regular basis;
  • you are ready to keep the catalogue alive (photos, product pages, promotions).

Why not both?

It’s often the smartest option. Many of our clients start with a polished business website, then add a small online store for a few flagship products: gift vouchers, gift boxes, training. You test demand without betting everything on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business website and an e-commerce website?

A business (brochure) website presents what you do and triggers contact — a call, a booking, a quote request — and the sale is closed in person. An e-commerce website takes payment online and handles orders, stock and shipping.

Does a tradesperson need an online store?

Rarely. Tailored services sell after a conversation: a business website that ranks locally, with a quote form, brings in more. A small store can be added for gift vouchers or a few products.

Can I add an online store to my website later?

Yes, if the site is built to grow. It's often the safest route: test demand with a few products before investing in a full catalogue.
